Predictions for the telecom industry in 2018

As we enter a brand new year, it’s always a good idea to look back on the trends we’ve seen recently and try to predict what the coming months might have in store. There have been a few interesting developments within the telecom industry recently, so in this blog post we’re going to outline the likely shifts we’ll see in 2018.

Internet of Things

The Internet of Things, or IoT, will really come to the fore this year. It is estimated by the International Data Corporation that by 2020 over 29 billion devices will be connected to the internet. This is, of course, big news for the telecom industry, as it means the way we currently understand communication is likely to change massively. For example, real time communication is no longer the sole purpose of the devices we use to communicate, but just one feature amongst a plethora of others.

5G

5G is an incredibly popular concept right now within the telecom industry, and this is a trend which is not likely to slow down this year. It’s predicted by 2021 there will be over 24 million 5G users globally, even though the technology itself is not expected to be released until 2020. Much of the telecom industry this year will likely be concerned with preparing for this switch. However, in the mean time, WiFi remains the fastest way to offload data whilst on a 4G network, so it will be important to continue focusing on the development of WiFi hotspots.

Network Function Visualisation

Also referred to as NFV, it is likely that adhering to the standard of network function visualisation, and paying more attention to the potential of software based infrastructures will be big news in 2018. This will mean that the telecommunications industry is working upon a standardised framework, which will make it easier than ever before for different companies to work with each other. However, there is a long way to go before all businesses can benefit from true NFV, so this might not yet be a reality for many businesses who don’t want to face the likely delays that often come with new technology such as this.
